ELENA: Well, what a beautiful place. JAVIER: Yes, this campus is very nice. ELENA: Yes. This is the main library, isn’t it? JAVIER: That’s right. Its name is Olin Library. ELENA: And that building, what is it? JAVIER: This is a building for the sciences. And that one too. And in that building are the labs. ELENA: Great. JAVIER: Shall we go and I’ll show you more? ELENA: Let’s. Che, Javi, and the gym, where is it? JAVIER: Well, look, it’s on this street, a little further down. It’s not seen from here but it’s close. Hey, do you exercise? ELENA: Yes. Well, I like to go to the gym and also I go out jogging. And, if there is a pool, I love to swim. JAVIER: Great, because they have an Olympic-size pool. The facilities are wonderful. You even can take gym classes. ELENA: How nice! And all those buildings also belong to the university? JAVIER: Yes. Look. These over here are halls for first and second year students. The oldest universities of the hemisphere

The Spanish-speaking world has very old universities on both sides on the ocean. The oldest is La Universidad de Salamanca, founded in 1218, which makes it the 9th oldest of Europe.

The first universities founded in the Americas are located in Spanish-speaking countries. In fact, there wasn’t an English-speaking university (Harvard, 1636) until almost one hundred years after the Spaniards open their first university—la Universidad de Santo Tomás de Aquino, today la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, which was founded in 1536 in The Dominican Republic. Several other universities founded in the 16th and 17th century in Latin America are still functioning today:

  • Universidad Nacional San Marcos de Lima, 1551
  • Universidad Autónoma de México (UNAM), 1551
  • Universidad de Córdoba, Argentina, 1613
  • Universidad de San Carlos Borromeo, Guatemala, 1676

Datos generales
